This year, we’re hosting an exciting event for teens with food allergies. We asked organizer and facilitator Kyle Dine to tell us more about it. We hope to see you there!

Can you tell our readers about the Teen Allergy Workshop we’ll be holding on May 28th? Where and when will it take place?

Our teen workshop will be very unique this year. In the past we have had the session as part of our national community conference. This year we’re breaking off and doing something quite different that we feel teens will love!

The workshop will take place in the morning (8am-noon) at a hip and trendy community arts centre called 918 Bathurst.  The morning will feature youth-led discussions on allergy-related topics such as travelling, dining out, preparing for university, and dating. Members of our Youth Advisory Panel are planning some great games and team building activities during the session. Plus, there will be prizes!

Following the session, the group will head down to the Rogers Centre to catch a Blue Jays baseball game in the peanut/nut-reduced section. Bus transportation to the game will be provided.

Who is registration open to?

Registration is open to teens and young adults from ages 13-21. Guests of attendees are also welcome to attend the morning workshop free of charge!  Friends and parents can also join us for the baseball game, but must purchase a ticket in advance.

How is the workshop conducted?

The workshop is focused on connecting youth. Whether that’s through open discussions, fun ice breakers, group activities or partnering up for a brainstorm, the session brings youth together and often results in many new friendships.

What kinds of activities are there? What kinds of topics?

The workshop gives teens the opportunity to have a voice on topics that matter to them – friends, dating, travel sports and more. Teens are typically a hard to reach group when it comes to raising food allergy awareness and education. Activities in the sessions aim to provide their feedback and thoughts on how to reach more teens and truly make a difference. One such example will be a group activity coming up with national awareness campaign ideas targeted at youth.

There will also be some fun activities going on at the baseball game that will involve prizes and giveaways.
