Mustard allergy and canola protein

June 22, 2023

Health Canada recently announced the approval of certain canola protein isolate ingredients for use in food products in Canada. Canola protein isolate ingredients are new food ingredients in Canada that are intended for use as alternative protein sources.

If you have mustard allergy, Health Canada is recommending that you avoid products containing added canola protein as they may cause an allergic reaction in some people. This is because they contain proteins that are very similar to mustard allergen proteins.

Historically, the only product of canola that is commonly used in food is canola oil. Canola oil is normally highly refined and does not contain any appreciable amounts of protein. For this reason, canola oil is not considered to pose a risk for people with mustard allergy. More information can be found on Health Canada’s website.

Labelling requirements

If canola protein isolate ingredients are used in pre-packaged foods (e.g., soups, cereals, pasta etc.), it must be included in the ingredient list.

Health Canada expects food manufacturers to label all foods that contain a canola protein ingredient, but do not contain mustard, with a cautionary statement indicating canola protein may not be suitable for individuals with mustard allergy. This will allow people with mustard allergy to make an informed food choice.

If you or your family member has a mustard allergy:

  • read food labels carefully, do the triple check
  • speak to your allergist about canola protein
  • be aware of the risk of eating food that contains canola protein

If you aren’t sure if a pre-packaged food contains canola protein, contact the company named on the label.
