An EoE diagnosis can be overwhelming at first. As you learn more about EoE, managing it can become part of your daily life. Here are tips that can help:

  • Seek information from reliable sources such as your healthcare team (gastroenterologist, allergist, dietitian) and patient organizations like ours
  • For those choosing dietary treatments, plan ahead for your dietary needs and avoid foods that may trigger symptoms (inside and outside the home)
  • Follow your treatment plan whether medical or dietary
  • Join a support group and connect with others living with the condition (ask your healthcare team about in-person and online groups)
  • Educate others, like family and friends, about EoE so they know how they can better support you.
  • Check out Food Allergy Canada’s Understanding EoE webinar, our “Ask the dietitian” article, and the EoE article (when bread becomes difficult to swallow)

Managing emotions

Many with EoE learn to cope and adapt to certain eating habits that alter their everyday lifestyle. For example, they avoid certain foods or develop different ways to deal with food getting stuck in their throat.

At times, the condition causes some people to avoid eating out in restaurants or socialize, and they isolate themselves.

Remember
  • Talk to a medical professional if you are experiencing heightened stress, anxiety or fear related to your EoE.
