Epinephrine auto-injectors. Medical jewellery. Inhalers, blue and orange. For low-income Canadian families, the cost of managing food allergies and/or asthma is often too high, and kids may have to do without these necessities for months or longer. This summer on our blog, we are running a series about financial assistance programs and the community heroes who are making a difference for low-income families and others in need with food allergies.
First up in our series: MedicAlert.
No Child Without
Through the No Child Without program, MedicAlert Foundation Canada offers MedicAlert service coverage and lifesaving ID to students (from age 4 to their 14th birthday) in select, participating schools. The financial support of generous donors including the Government of Canada and the Lions Clubs of Canada these students receive MedicAlert protection for free.
More than 58,680 students across Canada have benefited from No Child Without. The program is currently active in 240 school boards, representing 6,113 schools. Students with asthma, life-threatening allergies, special needs or other health conditions all benefit from the MedicAlert service.
To find out if your school is involved (or if you are a teacher or principal who is interested in learning more), visit the No Child Without website.
Membership Assistance
MedicAlert also has an assistance program for families who are experiencing financial limitations. To find out more, contact MedicAlert directly at 1-866-734-9423 or visit MedicAlert to learn more about the types of programs available to protect your child.
Why MedicAlert?
MedicAlert medical identification is engraved with key medical information (such as allergies and medications) as well as a 24/7 Emergency Hotline number, staffed with medically trained specialist who can put emergency responders in touch with the designated emergency contact person and provide any other medical or health information parents want shared in moments of crisis.
For a child, MedicAlert can put responders directly in touch with the parents or other caregivers, as specified on the ID.
For more than 50 years, MedicAlert has been providing Canadians with this lifesaving service, and it is a recognized and trusted brand among emergency responders. To read about how MedicAlert changed one life, see Rebecca’s story.
Thank you
Food Allergy Canada would like to thank MedicAlert for all they do to serve our community, and for making sure that those in need have equal access to important health services.
If you have allergies or another health condition, please remember to wear your medical identification jewellery. It could save you in an emergency.
